Introduction
The psychological conditions of the people differ from one another in which the responses from the people in different situations also differ. Inner peace is generally known as peace of mind but the attainment of that inner peace has different sources. The article discusses about the concept of inner peace and the different view points of the concepts as the people may attain it through different sources.
Definition of Concept
Inner peace (also known as peace of mind) refers is a deliberate state of psychological or spiritual calm maintained, despite the presence of stressors. It is associated with a state of psychological "homeostasis[1]" and the opposite of being stressed or anxious. It is also considered to be a state where one's mind performs at an optimal level, regardless of outcomes. Peace of mind is thus generally associated with a state of contentment and emotional well-being including bliss, happiness and contentment.[2] However, the inner peace is difficult to define as a whole because there can be many definition to inner peace due to the subjectivity involved in the concept. Generally, it is called as the state of happiness, satisfaction and calmness while the sources of these feelings may differ from one another.
Different aspects of Inner Peace
Peace of mind, serenity, and calmness are descriptions of a disposition free from the effects of stress. In various cultural traditions, inner peace is regarded as a state of consciousness attainable through practices such as breathing exercises, prayer, meditation[3], tai chi or yoga. Many spiritual practices refer to this peace as an experience of knowing oneself. Meanwhile, the materialism has been criticized from the supporters of spirituality who synonymize spirituality as the major cause of inner peace. There are examples where inner peace is attained with the help of money, power, ownership etc., discussing that the inner peace is a subjective concept which has different meanings, definitions and specially the sources of inner peace are different. Some get inner peace in loneliness while others have the feelings of inner peace with family and relatives. However, inner peace can be challenging due to the demands and stressors of daily life. Spiritual development is generally considered a gradual process, with various practices and approaches aimed at fostering a deeper sense of spirituality over time.
Recommendations to Achieve Inner Peach
The research suggests that mindfulness training can contribute to inner peace by reducing stress and enhancing psychological well-being. A randomized controlled trial found that participants who underwent mindfulness training reported significantly higher levels of inner peace and lower stress-related symptoms compared to a control group. These findings indicate that structured mindfulness practices may serve as an effective method for fostering emotional stability and resilience[3]. It supports the claims that different people can give different feedback in case of inner peace as the controlled environment does not support the minds but in some cultures, collectivism forces the closed environments to form closed groups and inner peace might be higher among the participants. Hence, there cannot be one definition, source or suggestion to achieve inner peace but it depends on psychological needs of people.
Furthermore, Inner peace has been described as "a low-arousal positive emotional state coupled with a sense of balance or stability."[4]Inner peace is also assumed to be a highly beneficial state and one that reflects human flourishing[5]. In this regard, Tenzin Gyatso, the current and 14th Dalai Lama, emphasizes the importance of inner peace in the world:
The question of real, lasting world peace concerns human beings, so basic human feelings are also at its roots. Through inner peace, genuine world peace can be achieved. In this the importance of individual responsibility is quite clear; an atmosphere of peace must first be created within ourselves, then gradually expanded to include our families, our communities, and ultimately the whole planet.[6][7]
So, it is concluded that the inner peace is necessary for every human being because its relates to emotional and psychological health. The therapies and practices can lead to achieve that inner peace by understanding the psychological needs of different people who achieve peace through different sources.
