Bowles is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 158 at the 2020 census, down from 166 at the 2010 census. Bowles is located 11 miles (18 km) south of downtown Fresno,[6] at an elevation of 279 feet (85 m).[5]
Geography
[edit]According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.
History
[edit]A post office operated at Bowles from 1904 to 1943.[6] The name honors a local pioneer family.[6] Bowles was a station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Valley Division.

The 2020 United States census reported that Bowles had a population of 158. The population density was 414.7 inhabitants per square mile (160.1/km2). The racial makeup of Bowles was 77 (48.7%) White, 4 (2.5%) African American, 7 (4.4%) Native American, 2 (1.3%) Asian, 0 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 50 (31.6%) from other races, and 18 (11.4%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 93 persons (58.9%).
The census reported that 62.7% of the population lived in households and 37.3% were institutionalized.
There were 38 households, out of which 22 (57.9%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 22 (57.9%) were married-couple households, 3 (7.9%) were cohabiting couple households, 6 (15.8%) had a female householder with no partner present, and 7 (18.4%) had a male householder with no partner present. 4 households (10.5%) were one person, and 1 (2.6%) were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.61. There were 32 families (84.2% of all households).
The age distribution was 26 people (16.5%) under the age of 18, 6 people (3.8%) aged 18 to 24, 30 people (19.0%) aged 25 to 44, 57 people (36.1%) aged 45 to 64, and 39 people (24.7%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 55.0 years. There were 88 males and 70 females.
There were 38 housing units at an average density of 99.7 units per square mile (38.5 units/km2), of which all were occupied. Of these, 14 (36.8%) were owner-occupied, and 24 (63.2%) were occupied by renters.[23][24]
